WebM is an open, royalty-free media container developed by Google. It typically uses VP8 or VP9 video codecs (and increasingly AV1) with Vorbis or Opus audio. WebM is optimized for the web and is natively supported in Chrome, Firefox, and Edge.
This is worth knowing because it makes WebM the easiest source to work with here. The editor loads your file into an HTML5 video element before uploading, so you can scrub the timeline, set trim points, crop, and paint a mosaic mask — and that step depends on your browser being able to decode the file. WebM is one of only three containers with support across all browsers, alongside MP4 and Ogg, and VP8, VP9, and AV1 are all decoded natively. So unlike MOV with HEVC, MKV, AVI, or WMV, a WebM file will not fail at the preview step. If you have a choice about what to record or export, WebM and H.264 MP4 are the two formats that behave predictably from upload through to conversion.
Expect the GIF to be bigger, often several times bigger, and understand why so you can plan around it. VP9 and AV1 use interframe compression: they store one full frame and then only the differences for subsequent frames, which is extremely efficient for video where most of the picture is unchanged between frames. GIF has nothing equivalent. Each frame is stored as its own indexed-colour image, so a two-second clip at 24 fps is 48 complete images. That structural difference, not a setting, is why a 200KB WebM can become a multi-megabyte GIF. The levers that actually help are duration, which is linear, dimensions, which are quadratic, and frame rate, which is roughly linear and costs the least perceived quality on slow-moving content.
Most WebM files people convert here come from browser-based screen recorders, and that content has particular needs. Legibility matters more than smooth motion: if someone has to read a menu label or follow a cursor, choose Higher Quality at 24 fps with a full 256-colour palette rather than dropping the preset to save bytes. Crop to the panel or dialog you are demonstrating instead of exporting the whole viewport — a cropped 600px-wide region at high quality reads better than a full 1920px screen squeezed into the same number of bytes. Screen content also tends to compress well because large flat areas of interface do not vary much in colour, so you can often stay at a higher preset than you would for camera footage of the same length.

It should not. WebM is supported as a container across all browsers, and VP8, VP9, and AV1 are decoded natively, so the preview step that trips up MOV with HEVC, MKV, AVI, and WMV does not apply here. If a WebM does fail, the file itself is likely damaged rather than the codec being unsupported.
