MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is a digital multimedia container that stores video, audio, and subtitles. It uses H.264 or H.265 compression for efficient streaming and is supported by virtually every device and browser. Because MP4 files are already well-compressed, they make excellent source material for GIF conversion.
MP4 is a container, and the codec inside it determines whether the editor can show you a preview. Before anything is uploaded, your file is loaded into an HTML5 video element so you can scrub the timeline, set trim points, crop, and paint a mosaic mask. That step uses your browser's decoder, not ours. H.264 is decoded by every browser and is what the overwhelming majority of MP4 files contain. H.265 (HEVC) is different: it reaches roughly 92% of browsers by usage share, but only about 17% have full support, and the rest depend on an OS-level or hardware decoder being present. Our server converts both without any issue — we verified HEVC in 8-bit and 10-bit form through the live upload path. So if an MP4 refuses to load in the editor while another works fine, the codec inside is the usual explanation, not the file being broken. Re-exporting as H.264, or opening the page in Safari on Apple hardware, resolves it.
Once you know how the arithmetic works, you can hit a size target deliberately instead of guessing at the quality slider. Duration is linear: halve the clip, halve the file. Dimensions are quadratic, because halving width and height removes three quarters of the pixels — this is why cropping to the region that matters is the cheapest quality win available. Frame rate is roughly linear and costs the least perceived quality on slow-moving content, which is why the frame-rate slider is worth touching on the Smaller File and Higher Quality presets, where it is adjustable. Smallest File and Best Quality lock it to 5 and 30 fps respectively. Because the result depends on how much motion and colour variation your clip contains, check the byte size shown after conversion against your target platform rather than relying on a fixed percentage.

Server-side processing is capped at two minutes, which is the real ceiling. Long before that, file size becomes the practical limit: GIF has no interframe compression, so every extra second adds a full set of frames. Clips under 15 seconds give the best balance, and 3 to 5 seconds is enough for a reaction, a UI interaction, or a bug repro.

Uploads and downloads run over HTTPS; the server writes your file to temporary storage because FFmpeg reads from disk, deletes it after the GIF is returned, and clears any leftovers within 10 minutes.
GIF is limited to a 256-colour palette per frame while your MP4 may contain millions of colours, so conversion has to choose which colours survive and simulate the rest through dithering. That is structural rather than a setting you can turn off. Best Quality gets closest by building the palette in a separate pass over every frame; if text or fine detail is what matters, cropping to that region helps more than raising the preset, because it keeps more pixels for the part you care about.
